"En (縁)" means having a special relation, "nichi (日)" means day. An en-nichi,
or festival day, is a day connected with Shintoist and Buddhist
deities. This day usually celebrates the birth or the passing of the deity they are honoring. People visit the shrines and temples on this day can receive special
divine favors. On en-nichi, shrine and temple grounds are alive with people, and street stalls do a thriving business.
A fun part of en-nichi is the production of a large number of
food and game stalls near the temple or shrine. This attracts many
visitors young and old. Some of the popular foods include okonomiyaki (Japanese
pancake), yakimorokoshi (grilled corn on the cob), takoyaki (round
flour batter balls filled with octopus), kakikoori (shaved
ice) sosu sembei (cookies), and Bekko-ame (candies).
Other stalls feature kingyo sukui (a game of
scooping up goldfish on a thin net made of paper), omen (plastic masks
of famous cartoon characters), water balloons and various goods.
